What You Actually Need to Build
I grab a saw, a hammer, and coins. Not fancy coins. Just enough to cover the sawmill fee or buy nails when I’m too lazy to smith.
Planks are the backbone. Normal, oak, teak, mahogany (pick) your tier. I cut logs myself sometimes, but the sawmill saves hours.
It costs 1 gp per plank. Yes, really. One coin.
(It adds up fast if you’re making fifty doors.)
Nails? Ironmen forge them. Mains buy them.
Shops near the sawmill stock bronze to rune. I’ve wasted time trying to smith nails mid-build. Don’t do it unless you enjoy staring at an anvil.
Limestone and cloth matter for a few things (like) fairy rings or certain furniture (but) 90% of Construction Tips Osrs Hmcosrs boils down to planks and nails.
You’ll run out of nails faster than you think. Always carry extra.
I keep a stack of oak planks in my bank. Always. Teak is nice, but oak gets me through most builds without draining my wallet.
Saw first. Hammer second. Coins third.
Everything else is noise.
You ever try building with a broken saw? Don’t. Just don’t.
The hammer feels stupidly light until you swing it ten times. Then your wrist remembers.
Build slow. Replace tools before they break. And stop hoarding mahogany planks “just in case.” You won’t use them.
Training That Doesn’t Bleed Gold
I trained Construction from 1 to 99. Twice. Not for fun.
To stop wasting time.
Crude Wooden Chairs cost nothing (just) normal planks and a hammer. You get ~250 XP each. At level 1, that’s fine.
At level 19? You’re bored before the chair finishes. (And yes, it feels like it takes forever.)
Oak Larders start at level 33. Each gives ~1,400 XP. Oak planks cost money.
But not much. You’ll hit level 50 faster than you think.
Then comes the demon butler. Hire him in your POH basement after completing The Great Brain Robbery. He builds things for you while you AFK.
No clicking. No stamina drain. You still get full XP.
And yes. It feels unfair. (It is.)
Mahogany Homes? Fastest method above level 70. Client contracts pay back some costs.
Rewards include mahogany planks and gold. But you’ll spend real cash on planks unless you’re farming them yourself.
Gilded Altars and Mahogany Tables give massive XP (but) they’re expensive to build and demolish. Expect 100k (150k) XP/hour. Cost: 2 (3) million GP per hour.
Here’s what I actually ran:
1. Crude Chairs: ~20k XP/hour, near-zero cost
2. Oak Larders: ~85k XP/hour, ~500k GP total

Demon Butler + Mahog Homes: ~130k XP/hour, ~2.5m GP
4. Gilded Altars: ~145k XP/it, ~3m GP/hour
You want speed or savings? There’s no magic fix. Just math and patience.

Ironmen Build Differently
I build with what I can get. Not what I wish I had.
Ironmen don’t get free planks or nails from friends. No bank access means every log, every nail, every plank has to be earned the hard way.
Woodcutting is slow. Miscellania helps (but) only if you’ve got the kingdom running. I run it weekly.
It’s not optional. (You’re already thinking: Is it worth the setup time? Yes. Just do it.)
The sawmill is non-negotiable. You cut logs. You walk them to the sawmill.
You convert them. No shortcuts. I teleport to Varrock Lumberyard for plank runs.
It saves 90 seconds per trip. That adds up fast.
Nails? You smith them. Level 15 Smithing gets you iron nails.
Level 30 gets steel. Don’t skip the levels. You’ll need both.
Mahogany Homes are where Ironmen pull ahead. Cheaper materials. More XP.
Less grinding per level. I built mine at level 50 and never looked back.

Farming runs pay well. So do slayer tasks. Pick one that fits your level.
Don’t grind what bores you.
